Lost In Music – Festivaali

Alma Alanko

The 23-year-old rising musician and songwriter Alma Alanko from Helsinki began taking music more seriously about four years ago when she decided to study songwriting in Berlin. Over time, the idea of pursuing a solo career also began to take shape.

“Music has always been my way of expressing myself and processing my emotions. My music is very lyric-driven with a modern sound, influenced by the songs I listened to as a child,” Alanko explains.

“I initially wanted to start making Finnish hyperpop because that genre had a strong impact on me since my teenage years, but as we began developing the sound, it unexpectedly started to take on a darker and more pop-like shape,” she continues.

The years spent in Berlin have also left their mark on Alma’s songs. Many of the tracks written in recent years reflect moments experienced in the city and the inspiring people she met there.

“In Berlin, I got to know the local rap, pop, and dance music scenes, which have influenced the production of my own songs. I still listen to a lot of German pop, and one of my favorite artists is Baby B3ns. I also listen to a lot of new Finnish pop and am hooked on hits from Mirella and Behm, for example. Musically, the artist who has inspired me the most is Charli XCX. I’m fascinated by how she can constantly evolve as an artist while still maintaining her unique voice. In general, I’m inspired by the people around me, books, great songs, and interesting words and phrases.”

Alma’s debut single, Kivinen sydän, released on Friday, March 8th, tells the story of post-breakup martyrdom. The production of the song is handled by Alpo Nummelin, known from the band Ruusut, and Ilmari Turunen. “Kivinen sydän is a self-ironic, angry, yet also humorous song. It’s influenced by early 2000s PMMP and German dance tracks,” Alanko shares.
