Helsinki via Falmouth Inka Upendo is a musician and producer who crafts unique soundscapes of intertwined percussion, ethereal vocals, found sounds and synthesizers.
She has been played on BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6 Music, and was invited back to play a session for BBC Music Introducing in Devon and Cornwall, where she has three times been upload of the week. In November, Inka was a BBC Radio 1 Next Wave artist on Jack Saunders’ The Indie Show with her track Waterworld. Inka has performed live at Reading & Leeds Festivals (BBC Introducing Stages), in Falmouth, Winchester and London, and at the festival Kontula Electronic in Finland. She ended 2019 playing a number of UK shows, including a sold out support-slot for CRUMB at The Dome, Tufnell Park, and a headline gig at The Social.
Inka’s debut EP “Samsara” featuring Mellow, Limbo, Surya, Beatiful and Waterworld came out on 4 October 2019 and contrasts dark and light elements of production, exploring themes such as feelings of inadequacy, the absurdity of love and the ubiquity of capitalism. It was followed up by dare me (tease) on New Year’s Day, in anticipation of more music later this year.
In November 2020 Inka Upendo was asked to be a part of BBC Masterclass “Making It As A One (Wo)Man band” with Jack Garratt, Georgia and Helena Star. In early 2021 Inka Upendo was invited to the “Mutants Mixtape vol.4” album curated by Arca. After the song Bestfriend (in collaboration with 1011) was released, it was chosen by the fans as a favorite and made it to a special edition vinyl called “Mutants Mixtape: Best of 1-4”.
Inka is currently recording her new EP – demos are available on request.
