PÄIVI HIRVONEN

Päivi Hirvonen is a vocalist, violinist, and jouhikko (bowed lyre) player, a two-time Emma Award nominee, and an internationally active artist who has captivated audiences around the world—both as a solo performer and as part of the electro-folk group Okra Playground. A trailblazer in the simultaneous performance of singing and violin playing, Hirvonen blends Finnish folk music with elements of pop and singer-songwriter traditions. Their music is defined by the masterful use of Finno-Ugric vocal techniques, the hypnotic sound of the jouhikko, and deeply rooted violin playing, creating a truly distinctive sonic palette. Through their songs, Hirvonen addresses themes such as climate change and human rights, while also singing about love in all its beauty.

Their first two solo albums received widespread international acclaim. The second album, KALLIO, reached No. 10 on the World Music Charts Europe and No. 15 on the Transglobal World Music Chart. The third album, MAA PALAA, was released in April 2025. On both the new album and in live performances, Hirvonen is joined by Tero Pajunen and Mirva Ormin, forming a unique trio of three vocalist-violinists. Live electronics and sound design are provided by Tuomas Haimakainen.
